The Shadow of Nerath
In the period after the ordering of the world by the Gods, the various mortal races largely stayed isolated from each other. This was by design, as the Gods had chosen or created their races, they had each picked out areas for them to live, and all had agreed it best not to put them too close together. Some Gods were not satisfied with this. While many of the Gods assumed that it would be Bane’s Goblins or Tiamat’s Kobolds who started trouble first, all were surprised when Bahamut’s Dragonborn became the first to race. The Dragonborn were among the most powerful races amongst the mortals, blessed with great power by Bahamut and led by the mighty [Dragon Lords]], they built a truly great civilization in the Central Plains. However, they were not satisfied with what they had. They felt that their’s was the one truly “good” civilization, and that all of the others would benefit from their leadership. After all, Bahamut was the leader of the “good” Gods, and they were the chosen of Bahamut, why should they not lead the “good” races. Under the leadership of the Gold Dragon Arakosh, they began to expand out into the rest of the continent. When they encountered other followers of the other gods, they demanded tribute and obedience. Some cities and people were willing to submit, but others refused and suffered the wrath of the Dragons. The most prominent of these was the Kobold kingdom of Malastrx. The Kobold nation was wiped from the land so thoroughly that today, the majority of Kobolds are completely unaware of this piece of their history. The Arkoshian Empire (as it came to be known) spread through most of the known world, conquering a diverse group of subjects including the Eladrin, Goblin, Orc, Minotaur, and most of the Humans. However, it was the final piece of the Human civilization that would bring Arkoshia to it’s knees. The Human kingdom of Bael’turath, desperate for a way to keep themselves from being absorbed by Arkoshia, made some rash decisions. Abandoning the deity who had created the Humans (his or her name has been lost to time), the nobles of Bael’turath made pacts with Asmodeus, an exiled servant of Bahamut’s. Asmodeus gave the Turathians great power, and in return the Turathians agreed to gather souls for Asmodeus’s ascension ritual. Bael’Turath waged a long and bloody war against the Arkoshians, however they were eventually defeated after the Asmodeus’s ascension went somewhat…awry, turning his portion of the Astral Plane into the Nine Hells, and twisting his followers into the Tiefling race. Asmodeus abandoned his former followers, as they had served their purpose to him. Arkoshia would eventually triumph, but at a heavy price. The war had weakend Arkoshia’s armies to such a degree that many of the other vassal races decided to try their luck at rebelling. Meanwhile, the reordering of the Gods that took place after Asmodeus’s rise left Bahamut unable to aid his followers like he had in the past. In the end, nothing would remain of Arkoshia, the Dragonborn would be scattered to the winds of fate, left to live as nomads and mercenaries, while the Metallic Dragons were decreased in numbers so much that they took to living as hermits, much like their Chromatic cousins had after the fall of Malystrx.
