Drow

The mountains in the far northwestern of the continent are surrounded by dense jungles. Millenia ago, before the Dragon Wars, a clan of Eladrin known as the Ilythiiri left the forests and traveled north to explore the jungles. There they prospered, until the expansion of the near by Arkoshian Empire began to put pressure on them. The Dragonborn demanded tribute from the Eladrin, both both those in the Great Forest to the south and the Ilythiiri to the north. While the Eladrin were more than willing to appease the Dragon Lords, generations of surviving much harsher exsistance in the Jungles left the Ilythiiri overconfident, and they refused to pay tribute to the Dragons. The Ilythiiri realized that their way of life was at risk, and decided to strike first. They were overconfident in their ability to defeat the Arkoshians, and they soon found themselves overwhelmed. Angered at the sneak attack, the Dragons and the Dragonborn set out to drive the Ilythiiri from the Jungle to prevent future attacks. The Ilythiiri fled the jungles north into the mountains, and then into the safety of the Underdark. Once in the Underdark, they escaped the notice of the Dragons, as the Arkoshians turned their attention further south to the Humans of Bael’turath. However, the Dragons were bitter over the war, and took out that bitterness on the remaining Eladrin. The Eladrin courts blamed their misfortune on the Ilythiiri for starting the war. Similarly the Ilythiiri blamed the Eladrin for not coming to their aid. This began the rivalry between the two races that would eventually culminate in the Drow’s betrayal of the Eladrin during the Great War. Life in the Underdark further hardened the Ilythiiri. They felt that Corellan had abandoned them in their time of need. After the rise of Asmodeus, the Ilythiiri (by this time having taken the name Drow after the Queen who led them in their battles over the Illithid and other beings of the Underdark) began worshiping him, seeing Asmodeus as the one who had bested their hated enemies. This would last for millenia untill the time of Lloth. Lloth was a powerful sorceress who worshiped the goddess Tiamat. She gathered many followers in her call for war against the surface that had shunned them. She became the head of the high council, and led a series of wars against the Eladrin and against their Human vassals. This war continued for centuries as Lloth continued to gain more power and more followers. Then the Great War came, as the followers of Orcus unleashed hell upon the world. Like many of the “evil” races, the Drow were urged to make peace with their enemies to fight off the Undead. The temples of Asmodeus went so far as to openly call for an end to war with the Eladrin. Lloth could not abide by such talk, but too many Drow seemed to follow Asmodeus’ will on the matter. It was then that Tiamat appeared to her and offered her a chance for revenge. Tiamat envied Asmoedus’ position as the most powerful of the Dark gods, and hoped that swaying the Drow to join her would give Tiamat new glory and position. She aided Lloth in preperations for a series of rituals that would taint the forests of the Eladrin and sever the connections to the Feywild, as well as ascending Lloth to demigodhood at Tiamats side. The rituals were pulled off while the Eladrin where distracted with the war, the Feywild was sundered from the world in much they way the Shadowfell had always been, Eladrin who were trapped on either side of the rift were trapped in their respective planes. Worse still, those on the borders, as most Eladrin cities were, found themselves devestated. More than half of the Eladrin race was wiped out in a single day. With this one move, Lloth ascended to godhood at Tiamat’s side. To this day, the Drow still revere Lloth as the one who took revenge against their most hated of enemies (they tend to forget about the Dragonborn as the Dragonborn have not been a major power for generations, and thus were not the focus of the Drow’s passion).
